Dressing for Christmas
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 0:10It’s so close to being Christmas you can almost taste the mince pies already. The Christmas lights are casting warm glows over city centres; shops are filled with treats worthy of goddesses and you are definitely in the mood to party. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, as they say, and we interpret this as ‘party time’. Christmas is when we can all dress up in our glad rags, pull out our best handbags and generally live it up.
Every major high street store, international fashion brand and everything in between is pulling out all the stops in terms of Christmas fashion. Lookbooks everywhere are filled with dresses, dresses and more dresses. Despite the chilly temperatures that forecasters have been bandying about, the fashion industry is all about hiking that hemline and donning a party dress.
Several micro trends have popped up just in time for the office Christmas party, your best friend’s cocktail party, dinner with the in-laws and New Year’s. With Warehouse dresses as the perfect example, here are three of the best dress trends for Christmas.
Tactile cocktail dresses
The little LBD is getting its best makeover yet, this season. From sequins and feathers to leather and embellishment you just can’t help but touch these mega hot dresses. Two or three styles are key; one-shoulder Grecian mini dresses will have you feeling and looking like Aphrodite in no time; otherwise a modern take on the classic shift, complete with lace and/feathers will get you attention for all the right reason.
Seventies inspired disco dresses
Metallics, comprising of yet more sequins, as well as glitter and shiny silk and chiffon, are at the heart of the 1970s trend. Billowing sleeves, batwing styling and loose fits make this trend fun, sassy and feminine. More one-shoulder dresses in eye-popping brights with skinny belts do this trend proud. Everything has to be big and bold, from your hair and jewellery to the pattern on your dress and the entire outfit’s colour scheme. Wallflowers need not apply.
Daytime sixties inspired dresses
For the perfect daytime dress, suitable for dinner at the in-laws or shopping with the girls, the season’s range of sixties inspired tunics and loose-shift dresses is ideal. Three-quarter length sleeves and the relaxed fit give a more casual feel, whilst the micro-mini length will make sure you still feel girly and chic. Add details with crochet, lace and Peter Pan collars. Mustard, burnt orange and burgundy run through much of the clothing from the 1960s and continue to do so in the decade’s fashion revival this season.
